Ruthless Aggression

Cena makes his official WWE debut on SmackDown after Kurt Angle issued an open challenge. Cena stated that he possessed “Ruthless Aggression,” as Vince McMahon defined it. He barely lost the bout due to a simple roll-up pin. Senior wrestlers such as Billy Kidman, Farooq, Rikishi, and The Undertaker praised his efforts.

His big break came following a rivalry with Chris Jericho, whom he defeated in an upset at the Vengeance pay-per-view. He subsequently teamed up with Kidman for the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, but they were defeated in the first round by Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit. Cena’s setback drove him to turn heel and attack Kidman, blaming him for the loss. He also had a rivalry with Los Guerreros, winning his solo war with Chavo but losing the tag team bout with them alongside Edge.

He subsequently got into a feud with Brock Lesnar, and it was around this time that he began performing one of his signature techniques, FU, which was called after Lesnar’s F-5. He battled numerous huge stars, like The Undertaker, Kurt Angle, and Chris Benoit, and began to make a reputation for himself.
