Eric Aaron Bischoff, a.k.a. Eric Bischoff was born on May 27, 1955. He is a television producer, professional wrestler, podcast presenter, and on-screen personality from the United States. He is most well known for his roles as Executive Producer, Senior Vice President, and on-screen General Manager of WWE’s Raw brand. Bischoff previously worked as the Executive Producer of Impact Wrestling for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). In 2021, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.

A talented man

Bischoff, who had an amateur background in martial arts, occasionally competed in the ring, becoming a one-time WCW Hardcore Champion and headlining the 1998 Road Wild pay-per-view event alongside “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan vs. Diamond Dallas Page and Jay Leno. In 2006, he published his autobiography titled Controversy Creates Cash, which was published by WWE Books.

Early Career

Bischoff began his career in wrestling in 1986, working for Verne Gagne’s American Wrestling Association (AWA) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bischoff joined the AWA as an on-air interviewer and broadcaster in 1989 and remained there until the business dissolved in 1991. Then Eric began his career in the AWA’s syndicated programming sales department before becoming an on-air talent almost by accident and at the last minute. Due to Nelson’s unexpected absence, Verne Gagne and his son, Greg, decided to hire Bischoff to cover the interviews. The AWA was unable to meet payroll as it faded away, and Bischoff auditioned for a position as an announcer with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1990 but was not hired.

Eric Bischoff in WWE

Bischoff was appointed as the general manager of Raw by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE, previously WWF) in 2002. Despite his on-screen job, Bischoff maintained a large network of WWE connections to whom he could present creative ideas. On the July 15 broadcast of Raw, he made his debut as the first Raw general manager. With the general manager job, he regained his trademark smarminess, returning to the arrogant heel character he had played as the nWo dictator in WCW. He informed the crowd about how he was president of WCW, the inventor of the nWo, and how he drove Vince McMahon to alter the way he does business during his Raw debut.

Getting his head shaved

After losing to his (kayfabe) nephew Eugene at Taboo Tuesday, Bischoff got his head shaved. After shaving his head, Bischoff began a face turn. Randy Orton, Chris Benoit, and Chris Jericho were among his favourite face wrestlers. After enabling Randy Orton’s crew to take over as General Managers for up to four weeks, Bischoff took a vacation. After then-WWE Champion John Cena, who was recruited to Raw in June 2005, refused to join in Bischoff’s vengeance against an expected ECW resurgence, he began preferring heels again. As a response, Bischoff “declared war” on Cena, ordering wrestlers like Chris Jericho and Christian to attempt to oust Cena from the WWE Championship.

Eric Bischoff gets fired and writes a book

Bischoff was “fired” as general manager on the December 5 edition of Raw, when Cena body-slammed him and Vince McMahon placed him into a garbage truck and had him hauled out of the stadium after a “trial” where his history of unethical activities was detailed. Eric Bischoff then took the rest of the year off to write the book Controversy Creates Cash, which he published in 2006. Bischoff was initially opposed to writing a wrestling book, believing that “most are angry, self-serving revisionist history at best—and monuments to nonsense at worst.”

Brief appearence in WWE

Bischoff made his first appearance on WWE television in over a year on September 25, 2006, to sell and promote his just-completed book Controversy Creates Ca$h, giving a worked shot on Mr. McMahon and WWE. Bischoff appeared on Raw in Phoenix, Arizona on March 5, 2007, to offer Vince McMahon his opinion on the WrestleMania 23 battle versus Donald Trump. Bischoff’s WWE contract terminated in August 2007. On Raw’s 15th Anniversary Special on December 10, 2007, Bischoff was confronted by Chris Jericho, the man he fired on the show on August 22, 2005. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on April 6, 2021. He also made appearances on Raw on December 27 as the officiator for The Miz and Maryse’s vow renewal, and on SmackDown on January 21, 2022, during a backstage scene with Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville.
