Andre Rene Roussimoff (born 19 May 1946 – 27 January 1993, Coulommiers, Seine-et-Marne, France) was a French professional wrestler and actor better known by his in-ring name Andre the Giant in the WWE. He was known for his great size, which was a result of gigantism caused by excess growth hormone (acromegaly). That disorder also led to him being called “The Eighth Wonder of the World”. After his death in 1993, Andre became the inaugural inductee into the newly created WWF Hall of Fame. Outside of wrestling, he is best known for appearing as Fezzik, the giant in the 1987 film The Princess Bride.

Beginnings

Andre the Giant was born to Boris and Mariann. His family worked on the farms and they barely made a living. Andre showed signs of gigantism very early in his life. He started attending a local school at the age of 6. By the time he was 10 years old, he stood at 6 feet. Soon, his parents began worrying about him and feared that there was something wrong with their son. Andre started to work on his parents’ farm. However, after a few years of working, he felt that he was not cut out for it as he wished to do something more challenging. At the age of 17, he moved to Paris and met a wrestling promoter who thought he had a bright career in professional wrestling. Andre moved to America in 1971 and from 1973 to 1980, he was booked by World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) promoter Vincent J. McMahon as a roving “special attraction”, who wrestled for promotions throughout the United States, as well as in Japan for New Japan Pro-Wrestling.

Andre The Giant in WWE

Andre made his WWE debut in 1982 when Vince McMahon took over the company from his father. He needed new wrestlers to expand his company, and Andre was one of the very first wrestlers that he signed up. Andre was so important to Vince that he made several exceptions for him including allowing him to fight in New Japan Pro Wrestling. One of Andre’s greatest feuds was with Killer Khan who was also known as the Mongolian Giant. Another rival of his was Big John Studd. However, Andre ended up losing his matches by disqualification as nobody was able to pin him down.

Feud with Hulk Hogan

Andre feuded with Hulk Hogan in 1987. Up until then, he was “the only undefeated wrestler in wrestling history”, as prior to that, he had lost all of his matches via disqualification. At Wrestlemania 3, Andre challenged Hulk Hogan for a championship match for the WWF title, which Hogan had held for three years. Hogan accepted the challenge and won the match. He body-slammed Andre and pinned him down in what later became famous as the body-slam that was “heard around the world.” In February 1988, Andre finally defeated Hogan to win the World Heavyweight Championship.

Various Feuds

Towards the end of his time in the WWE, which was the late 1980s, Andre had feuds with the likes of Jim Duggan and The Mega Powers. He was not at the peak of his powers by this time but his popularity with the crowds was something else and he made all these feuds to be successful. He later started a feud with Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Jake would get a pet snake to the ring and Andre was scared of them. So Jake used this fear of Andre to his advantage and progressed with the storyline much to the delight of the crowd.

Andre The Giant wife

Andre The Giant married Jean Christensen although the couple never registered their marriage license in the United States. Jean first met Andre back in 1974 while doing PR for wrestling. They have a daughter named Robin Christensen who like her father is a wrestler. Christensen had almost no connection with her father and saw him only five times in her life, despite occasional televised and printed news pieces criticizing his absentee fatherhood. While she gave some interviews about the subject in her childhood, Christensen is reportedly reluctant to discuss her father publicly today.

Andre The Giant net worth

According to celebrity net worth, Andre The Giant’s net worth at the time of his death was $5 million. If you equate that amount to today’s standards, then that amount is equal to $10 million. In fact, he was mentioned in the 1974 Guinness Book of World Records as the highest-paid wrestler in history at that time. The Giant earned US$ 400,000 in one year during the early 1970s. He earned most of his money from wrestling throughout the world in places like America, France and Japan. He is also a well-known movie star who has acted in very famous movies.

What did Andre the Giant suffer from?

Andre was born Andre Rene Roussimoff in Grenoble, France on May 19, 1946. His parents, Boris and Marian Roussimoff, and four siblings were of average size. Andre, however, suffered from acromegaly, a disease that results in an overabundance of growth hormones.

How many beers could Andre The Giant drink?

Andre once consumed 119 12-oz beers in six hours. To put that in mere mortal terms, that equates to a 12-oz beer downed every three minutes, non-stop, for six hours straight. After the marathon drinking session, Andre (understandably) passed out in a hotel lobby and couldn’t be moved or stirred.
