Gunther is prepared to take on a 45-year-old legend in a significant WWE contest

With his willingness to challenge Brock Lesnar to a match, Gunther has successfully made the switch from the black and gold brand to SmackDown and appears to be making more waves on the main roster.

The Ring General changed his identity earlier this year when he switched from NXT UK to the black and gold brand. On WWE SmackDown soon after, Gunther made his main roster debut with Ludwig Kaiser. Soon after making his debut, he won the Intercontinental Championship by defeating Ricochet.

The Ring General has established himself as a pillar of the blue brand during a memorable encounter with Sheamus at WWE Clash at The Castle. The 35-year-old superstar described Brock Lesnar as his ideal opponent inside the squared circle in an interview with WMBD News:

“If I had to pin it down to one name, I’d say it’s Brock Lesnar at the moment. When I was young and watching WWE, I enjoyed watching his matches. Later on when I progressed in my career, I was able to watch wrestling and analyze how people work. He’s always been somebody I was impressed with. He’s one of the best to ever do it. I think that’s the biggest possible challenge for me at the moment.” [H/T – WrestleTalk]

The reigning Intercontinental Champion is Gunther. He has now held the title for more than 150 days after winning a recent WWE SmackDown match against Rey Mysterio.

Gunther recently discussed his contentious disqualification from the 2019 WWE Survivor Series

The long-running premium live event, Survivor Series, which takes place at the end of the year, has a new direction under the new administration, which is just around the horizon. Instead of the usual 5-on-5 tag team elimination bouts, the event will instead feature two WarGames matches.

In a customary elimination match in 2019, Team NXT faced off against Team RAW and Team SmackDown. Gunther suddenly lost the fight after only a few minutes. The 35-year-old superstar opened up to Steve Fall on Ten Count about his contentious match termination:

“There was a decision that was made and you go along with it and try to make the best out of it. I don’t think it was negative… When I started doing my bit in that match and then getting eliminated early, I think that did something to me.”

Fortunately, because he is the current Intercontinental Champion and one of the company’s top stars, the star’s confidence to perform on the main roster was not shaken by the sudden elimination.
