When Conor McGregor returns from a broken leg injury, he will lose 35 pounds and fight in the UFC lightweight category. As his rehabilitation from the massive setback against Dustin Poirier continues, the Irish star has already told supporters that he presently weighs 190 lbs.

Despite suggestions that he may return to 170 pounds, he has made it clear that lightweight redemption is his aim.

John Kavanagh, McGregor’s coach, feels the weight loss will not be “difficult” and that 155 pounds will “fit his build” better for a huge comeback in the summer.

When questioned about McGregor’s weight loss, Kavanagh informed Fox Sports, “I don’t think it will be all that difficult to be honest,” “He has made some pretty dramatic weight cuts in the past.

“155lbs seems to suit his frame, at the moment yeah light-heavyweight he is more suited towards but by the summertime when he is ready to return, the weight will be back down again.

“The physical stage of recovery is pretty much complete now, you have seen your posts himself. He has been enjoying himself over Christmas but he is ready to get back to that serious side of training and get ready for another contest.

“I’m just excited to see him back in there. It is always a big occasion, there isn’t much like a McGregor fight week. It doesn’t really matter you say any name and it’s exciting, but probably the Diaz trilogy would be a fan favorite.”

Conor McGregor’s UFC return

McGregor has ruled as a 155-pound champion, defeating Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to become a two-division champion.

After losing to long-time rival Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title challenge in 2018, he was stripped of his belt for inactivity during his boxing exploits against Floyd Mayweather.

He has subsequently fought twice more at lightweight, losing to Poirier in each of their fights, and is presently rated tenth in the division.

The most likely scenario for his return is a trilogy with Diaz, which could fight place at 170 pounds or 155 pounds.

However, with the Irishman looking for redemption at 155 pounds, he might confront the victor of the Tony Ferguson-Michael Chandler fight later this year.

Before being paired with Justin Gaethje, McGregor wanted a championship opportunity against Charles Oliveira, which the Brazilian champion would have gladly granted.

Gaethje has now labeled the 33-year-old as “irrelevant” and feels he is ineligible for the lightweight belt.
