Austin Theory in WWE

Austin Theory signed with the WWE on August 15, 2019. He made his in-ring debut in NXT on December 25th, 2019 by answering Roderick Strong’s invitation for the NXT North American Championship. He went on to lose but put on a good showing. His first win in WWE came when he defeated Joaquin Wilde.

In order to establish himself as a heel, Theory made an appearance on Raw as an associate of Zelina Vega. Theory competed against Kevin Owens and Raw Tag Team Champions The Street Profits with Angel Garza and Seth Rollins and lost. Theory and Garza unsuccessfully contested The Street Profits for the Raw Tag Team Championship on April 5 during the second night of WrestleMania 36. Theory and Garza were defeated by The Street Profits in a title rematch the following night on Raw. On the April 13 episode of Raw, after defeating Akira Tozawa, Vega’s other allies Garza and Andrade joined him in taking down Tozawa as all three of them posed together, reiterating their status as a faction.

Association with Vince McMahon

Theory was selected for the Raw brand as part of the 2021 Draft. After losing to Damian Priest on October 4’s episode of Raw, Theory made his return to the company by attacking Jeff Hardy, whom he later defeated on the next two episodes of Raw. On November 21, Team Raw defeated Team SmackDown in a match at Survivor Series. Theory was a member of Team Raw and eliminated Sheamus before Hardy eliminated him. Theory was given the WWE Championship battle against Big E in the main event when it was revealed on Raw the following night that he had stolen Cleopatra’s Egg from Mr. McMahon. Theory lost the match.

Following Theory’s victory over Finn Bálor on the January 17, 2022 episode of Raw, McMahon gave him a place in the Royal Rumble. On January 29, Theory competed in his first Royal Rumble battle entering third and lasted 22 minutes before being eliminated by AJ Styles. Kevin Owens was defeated by Theory in an Elimination Chamber qualifying match on the Raw programme from January 31.

WrestleMania match with Pat McAfee

In a match that also featured Seth Rollins, Styles, Riddle, and the defending champion Bobby Lashley on February 19 at Elimination Chamber, Theory was last pinned by Brock Lesnar and went on to lose the WWE Championship. Near the end of the match, Lesnar and Theory generated a buzz when Lesnar hit Theory with the F-5 from the top of the Elimination Chamber pod down to the floor.  Theory unsuccessfully attempted to get McMahon to accompany him to his interview with Pat McAfee on the Raw programme from February 28. He confronted McAfee on SmackDown on March 4 and declared he would face him at WrestleMania 38. Theory was unsuccessful and lost his match against McAfee at the Show of Shows.

United States Champion

After Theory pinned Finn Bálor the night before on Raw, The Usos and RK-Bro were beaten by Theory and The Usos, giving them the opportunity to contend for Bálor’s United States Championship. He became the second-youngest United States Champion in WWE history after defeating Finn Bálor to capture the title.

Bobby Lashley defeated Theory for the United States title at Money in the Bank on July 2, ending Theory’s reign. Later that evening, he participated in and won the Men’s Money in the Bank ladder match, becoming the first Money in the Bank winner to lose a title and earn the contract on the same night and the youngest superstar in WWE history to do so.

At Survivor Series WarGames on November 26, Theory won the United States Championship for the second time in his career by defeating Seth Rollins and Bobby Lashley in a triple threat match.
