The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) announced the men’s squad for the upcoming World Wrestling Championships 2022. The WFI conducted a one-day national selection trials for the same on Tuesday. Commonwealth Games gold medallists Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Bajrang Punia, and Deepak Punia got exemption from the trials and directly made it to the squad based on their impressive performances at the CWG. As there were no trials for the men’s 57kg and 65kg weight classes, potential wrestlers moved up to the 61kg and 70kg weight classes. The above two weight categories received a massive response.

CWG gold medallist Naveen cemented his place in the men’s 70kg by defeating Vishal Kaliraman in the final. In the men’s 61kg, Pankaj Malik got the better of Rahul Aware of Maharashtra. In the men’s 74kg final, Sagar Jaglan and Yash engaged in an intense battle to secure spots on their country’s squad for the World Championships. However, Jaglan had the better day among the two as he triumphed 3-2 in the match. All the bouts in men’s Greco Roman wrestling were pretty much on cards.

The World Wrestling Championships will take place from Sep 10 to Sept 18 at Belgrade in Serbia. The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Ravi, bronze winner Bajrang, and Deepak, who finished fourth will join the team directly after completing their training in overseas. The trials for the women’s freestyle was held on Monday in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
