The Netherlands will be eager to get back to winning ways when they face Japan in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022 on Sunday. The tournament co-hosts are on a two-game losing run and will be eager to end the streak soon. However, they will find it difficult to get a win over Asian powerhouse Japan. The ongoing World Championship is hosted in the Netherlands and Poland this year, and the tournament which started on 23rd September will end on the 15th of October.  

Placed in Pool D during Phase 1, Japan had won four of the five matches they played in the group to get 12 points. Their only defeat had come against a fellow Asian country in China. They began Phase 2 with an impressive victory over Belgium before losing to Italy in their next match. However, they defeated Puerto Rico in their last game. On the other hand, the Netherlands finished third in Pool A after securing nine points from five matches. The Dutch nation began Phase 2 on a positive note, beating Argentina 3-1 before suffering successive defeats against China and Brazil.

FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022 Format

The 24-team tournament will run from September 23 through October 15. The teams are split up into four groups of six teams each, and they compete in a round-robin format. Each pool’s top four teams advance to the second round and the 16 teams are divided into two pools of eight nations. The countries coming from the same first-round pool only play against opponents from a different first-round pool. Each pool’s top four teams compete in a quarterfinal round, with the winners moving on to the semifinals. The World Championship trophy will be up for grabs for the last-four victorious teams, while the third-place match pits the losers against each other.
