Italy and the United States of America will compete for the bronze medal at the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022. The Saturday evening encounter will be difficult to call as there is not much to separate the two teams in terms of quality. As they prepare for the match, both teams must put aside their disappointment at losing in the semifinals and go all out for the bronze medal. The current edition is hosted in the Netherlands and Poland this year, and the tournament which started on 23rd September will end on the 15th of October.
In Phase 1, Italy were unstoppable as they topped Pool A unbeaten after opposing teams struggled to contain them. Even though they began Phase 2 with a loss to Brazil, Italy bounced back with three successive victories to top the final Pool E standings. Meanwhile, the USA finished second in Pool C after losing only once in the group to Serbia. They finished second in Pool F during Phase 2. In the quarterfinals, the USA got past Turkey, while Italy defeated China. However, in the semifinals, old demons came to haunt them once again. Italy lost to Brazil, while the USA fell to Serbia.

The 24-team tournament will run from September 23 through October 15. The teams are split up into four groups of six teams each, and they compete in a round-robin format. Each pool’s top four teams advance to the second round and the 16 teams are divided into two pools of eight nations. The countries coming from the same first-round pool only play against opponents from a different first-round pool. Each pool’s top four teams compete in a quarterfinal round, with the winners moving on to the semifinals. The World Championship trophy will be up for grabs for the last-four victorious teams, while the third-place match pits the losers against each other.
