Italy will be looking to build on their opening day success when they take on Puerto Rico in the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022. The Monday evening contest will see the Europeans as the clear favourites. The form is on their side and they have also started the tournament in an impressive fashion. The same cannot be said for Puerto Rico, who were comfortably beaten in their opener. The tournament which is hosted in the Netherlands and Poland this year will take place from 23rd September to 15th October. 

In the opening clash, an African challenge awaited Italy in the form of Cameroon. The Europeans got their game plan in order to comfortably defeat Cameroon 3-0. On the other hand, Puerto Rico had a tough challenge awaiting them in the form of Belgium. The Europeans were simply too good on the day to eventually win the game 3-0. As it stands, the Netherlands and Belgium occupy first and second place respectively in Pool A with six points each from two games. Italy are sitting third with three points, while Puerto Rico have zero points to their name having both played one game till now.

FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022 Volleyball Format

The 24-team tournament will run from September 23 through October 15. The teams are split up into four groups of six teams each, and they compete in a round-robin format. Each pool’s top four teams advance to the second round and the 16 teams are divided into two pools of eight nations. The countries coming from the same first-round pool only play against opponents from a different first-round pool. Each pool’s top four teams compete in a quarterfinal round, with the winners moving on to the semifinals. The World Championship trophy will be up for grabs for the last-four victorious teams, while the third-place match pits the losers against each other.
