Italy will be taking on China in the final group match of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship 2022. The Wednesday night clash will not just be the last fixture of Pool E but will also be the final match of the overall group phase. Group toppers Italy are set to be in the elimination rounds irrespective of the upcoming fixture result, while the Asian nation has a mountain to climb. It is not like they are totally out of the reckoning, but they would need a miracle. Not only do the top two sides qualify for the knockout rounds but the best four third-placed teams will also book elimination round spots.
The format does give China a glimmer of hope, however, on paper their opponents Italy are the heavy favourites. The Europeans were expected to be one of the favourites for the title at the beginning of the tournament and they have lived up to those expectations with two resounding victories. Italy defeated Turkey and Canada by 3-0 scores. On the other hand, China lost to these two sides by the same 3-0 scoreline. In Pool E, Italy have six points, while Turkey and Canada have three points each. However, China have zero points to their name till now.

The 24-team competition will take place from August 26th to September 11th. All of the teams are divided into six groups with each pool consisting of four teams. The group phase will last for six days, with each team playing once against their pool opponents. Following the completion of the schedule, 16 teams will be ascertained. It will have all six pool winners, runners-up, and the best four third-placed teams. They will proceed to the first round of elimination.
