The beach volleyball event has kicked off in the Commonwealth Games, Birmingham, with the fans witnessing some interesting opening day results. On Day 1 (Saturday), there were two women’s games and four men’s matches. The gold winners in the men’s and women’s categories started their medal defence with a victory. With the action coming thick and fast, beach volleyball fans can expect to see a lot of entertainment in the coming days. Beach volleyball will be played from 30th July to 7th August.

In the other match, New Zealand got the better of Kenya by the same margin. Meanwhile, the Australian men had beaten the Maldives in their opening day clash. On Monday though there will be two women’s games and four men’s games on the schedule. In the women’s event, Canada will face Kenya and New Zealand will up against Ghana.

A total of 12 men’s and women’s teams will participate in the beach volleyball competition that will take place from 30th July to 7th August. The men’s and women’s sections will each have three pools with four teams in them. The knockout matches start on the fifth of August with the quarterfinals, the next day will be the semifinals and the medal matches will happen on the seventh of August (Sunday). Each match is played with a best of three sets. The first two sets are played to 21 points, and the third set is played to 15 points. The first team to reach 21 points – or 15 points – with a two-point advantage wins the set.
