With the beach volleyball tournament in the Commonwealth Games well underway in Birmingham, fans can expect to see a lot of exciting action-packed encounters in the coming days. This is only the second time the sport has made its appearance in the Commonwealth Games after making its debut four years ago in Gold Coast, Australia. In the current edition, beach volleyball takes place from 30th July to 7th August. The opening day (Saturday) of action saw four men’s matches and two women’s games. The defending gold medal winners started off with a victory in both men’s and women’s categories, while there were also other interesting results to take from the day’s games.

Finally, defending gold winners Australia started their medal defence with a 2-0 success over the Maldives. In the women’s event, last edition’s gold winners Canada beat Ghana 2-0 and New Zealand defeated Kenya by the same margin. Meanwhile, on Monday, there will be four men’s games, with Australia taking on South Africa and England facing Cyprus. Later, Rwanda will face Maldives and New Zealand will play Tuvalu.

A total of 12 men’s and women’s teams will participate in the beach volleyball competition that will take place from 30th July to 7th August. The men’s and women’s sections will each have three pools with four teams in them. The knockout matches start on the fifth of August with the quarterfinals, the next day will be the semifinals and the medal matches will happen on the seventh of August (Sunday). Each match is played with a best of three sets. The first two sets are played to 21 points, and the third set is played to 15 points. The first team to reach 21 points – or 15 points – with a two-point advantage wins the set.
