Beach volleyball will make its second appearance in the Commonwealth Games to be held in Birmingham, England this month. The sport made its debut four years ago in Gold Coast, Australia. A total of 12 men’s and women’s teams will participate in a bid to win the gold, silver and bronze medals. The men’s and women’s sections will each have three pools with four teams in them. Four years ago in Gold Coast, both men’s and women’s finals were contested between the then hosts Australia and Canada. The Aussies clinched the gold in the men’s event, while the Canadians got their hands on the coveted gold medal in the women’s category. New Zealand won the bronze in the men’s section while Vanuatu clinched the women’s bronze. With the current competition taking place at the brownfield site in Smithfield, supporters can expect to see Australia and Canada going at each other again for the top honours.

A total of 12 men’s and women’s teams will participate in the beach volleyball competition that will take place from 30th July to 7th August. The men’s and women’s sections will each have three pools with four teams in them. The knockout matches start on the fifth of August with the quarterfinals, the next day will be the semifinals and the medal matches will happen on the seventh of August (Sunday). Each match is played with a best of three sets. The first two sets are played to 21 points, and the third set is played to 15 points. The first team to reach 21 points – or 15 points – with a two-point advantage wins the set.
