Serbia have the opportunity to defend their FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship title when they take on Brazil in the final on Saturday. This contest has all the ingredients to make it an interesting watch. The European nation has been unstoppable in the competition till now, with no team managing to get a victory over them. On the other hand, the South American country has lost only once and it was during Phase 1. Since then they have also been equally impressive on their way to the final. With Brazil never managing to win the coveted title, Saturday will provide them with a great opportunity to lift their maiden World Championship trophy.
Brazil’s only defeat in the tournament came in Pool D against Japan during Phase 1. Since then the South American country has been mighty impressive in the competition as they have gone undefeated till now. On the other hand, Serbia have been the team of the tournament till now, as they breezed through Phase 1 and Phase 2 without any difficulty. The defending champions then had to dig deep to get past co-hosts Poland in the quarterfinals before defeating reigning Olympic champions the USA in the semifinals.

The 24-team tournament will run from September 23 through October 15. The teams are split up into four groups of six teams each, and they compete in a round-robin format. Each pool’s top four teams advance to the second round and the 16 teams are divided into two pools of eight nations. The countries coming from the same first-round pool only play against opponents from a different first-round pool. Each pool’s top four teams compete in a quarterfinal round, with the winners moving on to the semifinals. The World Championship trophy will be up for grabs for the last-four victorious teams, while the third-place match pits the losers against each other.
