Brazil will be keen to enact revenge on Japan when the two sides face each other in the quarterfinals of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship 2022 on Tuesday. Both these teams faced each other earlier in the competition and it was the Asian nation that emerged victorious. To date in the tournament, that was the only defeat suffered by the South American country. Hence, Brazil will be eager for payback when they take on an in-form Japanese side.
Brazil consistently produced top-quality performances in Pool D during Phase 1. The South American nation won four of their five games to finish third in their group with 12 points. Their only defeat was against Japan. At the end of Phase 2, Brazil finished second in Pool E with 23 points from nine matches. On the other hand, Japan finished a place lower with 21 points from nine games. They have won seven matches and lost only twice till now in the competition.

The 24-team tournament will run from September 23 through October 15. The teams are split up into four groups of six teams each, and they compete in a round-robin format. Each pool’s top four teams advance to the second round and the 16 teams are divided into two pools of eight nations. The countries coming from the same first-round pool only play against opponents from a different first-round pool. Each pool’s top four teams compete in a quarterfinal round, with the winners moving on to the semifinals. The World Championship trophy will be up for grabs for the last-four victorious teams, while the third-place match pits the losers against each other.
