During Saturday’s programme, Phil Hawes and Daniel Cormier were discovered squabbling in the cage. As the referees were getting ready to pronounce the decision, Hawes yelled at Cormier after stopping teammate Deron Winn at UFC on ESPN 37. Cormier, who was serving as colour commentator, entered the octagon to speak with Hawes for his post-fight in-cage interview. And when he heard from Hawes, he didn’t sit still and responded. It was an unanticipated turn of events.

Hawes shouted at Cormier saying, “You picked the wrong pony. Yeah, you dog. You know what I’m talking about. I’ll cool off and then next week you can fight me. Cormier said, “I don’t pick fights. Be respectful. You didn’t beat me. I don’t pick fights. Look at what happened. Why would I want this fight? You can do it better than that. Don’t do that.” Their quarrel came to an end at that point, and the broadcast resumed as usual. It’s unclear what sparked the altercation, but Hawes addressed it with the press backstage and accepted responsibility for the event.

Phil Hawes apologises

Phil Hawes post match in backstage said, “It was a misunderstanding on my behalf. DC is such a great role model to me. He’s a two-weight world champion and just a freaking stellar dude. So it was just a bit of miscommunication and wrong place, wrong time. I apologize. DC, please don’t beat me up.” With the win over Winn, Hawes was able to go back on the winning track. In November 2021, he was coming off a knockout defeat to Chris Curtis at UFC 268. That is his only defeat in the UFC. Hawes is 8-1 in his last nine fights, with five of them taking place in the UFC.

Last November, the 33-year-old recovered from a defeat to Chris Curtis. Hawes appeared to be in command of the fight as he mercilessly dismantled Winn. While referee Dean ordered a pause late in the second round, others claimed that considering how many times Winn was wobbled in the first round, the break should have been called earlier. After earning his way into the UFC through Dana White’s Contender Series, Phil Hawes currently has a record of four victories and one defeat.
