UFC lightweight championship contender Islam Makhachev has made a rather interesting claim about Conor McGregor. ‘The Notorious One’ has been out of action because of an injury which he suffered in his last fight against Dustin Poirier. McGregor has spent the last year recovering from the same.

After spending over a year out of the octagon, Conor McGregor has often made it known that he wants to fight again. However, it looks like Islam Makhachev doesn’t believe the Irishman. During a recent episode of the Full Send Podcast, the Dagestani spoke about how McGregor only cares about staying relevant.

While suggesting that he doesn’t believe the former UFC champion will come back, Makhachev said: “He’s always in the Twitter because people almost forget him, you know. And he try to put something and he put today something, people are gonna talk about him. But I don’t believe he’s gonna come back.”

It is safe to say that Islam Makhachev doesn’t expect Conor McGregor to ever return to the UFC. However, fans would hope the opposite, regardless of his recent below par performances inside the octagon, McGregor is still one of the biggest names in the sport.

Can Islam Makhachev beat Charles Oliveira?

The Dagestani is set to face the biggest challenge of his career this weekend. Islam Makhachev will be competing for the UFC lightweight championship against Charles Oliveira at the UFC 280 event in Abu Dhabi this Saturday.

Interestingly, going into the fight, Makhachev has emerged as the favorite to win the bout. However, it is worth noting that while the Dagestani has been on a winning streak, he has never encountered someone like Charles Oliveira. The Brazilian has a lot of experience when it comes to performing on the big stage, something which his opponent lacks.

However, Islam Makhachev arguably one of the best grapplers in the UFC right now. If he can manage to keep the fight on the ground, then the Dagestani can most certainly walk out of the octagon as the new UFC lightweight champion.
