UFC news: After a KO loss at UFC Austin, Eddie Wineland announced his retirement

Wineland, who turns 38 next week, suffered his third straight knockout loss inside the Octagon when Stamann stopped him with punches in the first round.

Eddie Wineland has announced the end of his UFC and MMA career. Following a one-sided TKO loss to Cody Stamann on the preliminary card of Saturday’s UFC Austin event, the former WEC champion turned to Instagram on Sunday to declare his retirement from the sport. Wineland had taken off his gloves in the octagon, but he was not allowed the opportunity to leave them behind and make the declaration during the fight.

Eddie posted a photo of his gloves on instagram and captioned saying, “I didn’t get an opportunity to leave my gloves in the cage but as Jim Morrison once sang. ‘this is the end,’” Wineland stated. “The road I’ve traveled over the past almost 20 years has seen many highs and lows, it’s been a fun ride but this train has reached its final destination!

“I am forever grateful and extremely thankful for the opportunities given by the UFC, Dana White and Sean Shelby, everything you guys and the company have done for and given to me I am forever grateful! Thank you and thank you to the fans who’ve always stood in my corner, officially retired. Thank you for the memories, time to turn the page, and on to the next chapter in life!”

Following loses to Sean O’Malley and John Castenada, this marks Wineland’s third straight knockout loss. Wineland pulled off his gloves after his loss to Stamann at UFC Austin, and he seemed to be ready to proclaim his retirement. Following a 16-fight tenure with the UFC, the 37-year-old finishes his career with a 24-16-1 record. Wineland fought for an interim bantamweight championship at UFC 165 in September 2013, but was defeated by Renan Barao in the second round. Wineland won the WEC championship in 2006 after defeating Antonio Banuelos in the opening round at WEC 20.
