While unrelated to Magomed Ankaraev, UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov has high hopes for the UFC’s #3 light heavyweight contender. In his 2021 interview with RT Sport, The Eagle opined that Ankalaev was likely to win his £205 gold medal. When asked who he thought was the best Russian fighter in each weight class in the UFC, the former UFC lightweight champion replied, “He is likely to be champion at 93 kg [205 lbs].” Eagle also explained that Askar Askarov, Petr Jan, recent lightweight champion Islam Makhachev and Russian-born Swedish fighter Kamzat Chimayev are notable fighters from Russia. Judging by Ankaraev’s current nine-game winning streak in his first MMA.

The 30-year-old will take on former champion Jan Blachowicz at UFC 282 on December 10 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The Goretz Fight Team students opened as the -225 favorites, against former champions who are now +190 underdogs. Many believe this match will be a potential number-one contender. The Russian has been undefeated since September 2018, and he has nine wins in the UFC.
