Conor McGregor, a former two-division champion who is never one to stay out of the controversy surrounding the lightweight championship race, jumped right into the conversation after Islam Makhachev defeated Charles Oliveira and the UFC swiftly revealed intentions to give Alexander Volkanovski the next title chance. The 34-year-old “Notorious” hasn’t competed in the Octagon since two defeats to Dustin Poirier in 2021, the second of which resulted in a severe leg break and several months of recovery. Although it appears like McGregor should be almost fully recovered, it is unclear when he will return to the ring given that he is now firmly separated from fighting by a movie project and a return to the USADA testing pool.

All of these details were brought up by Volkanovski in reply to McGregor’s social media post. That must have hit a nerve with McGregor because he said right away that he was “just watching and monitoring” and was “very thrilled for” Volkanovski and his chance to win a second championship. In fact, McGregor was so excited about Volkanovski’s fight with Makhachev that he decided to counsel the Australian on how to handle his transition to lightweight. The fight between Volkanovski and Makhachev has not yet been confirmed, but it is scheduled for UFC 284 on February 12 at the RAC Arena in Perth, Australia.
