Qinwen Zheng and Claire Liu are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Tokyo Open on Friday, September 23.
Qinwen Zheng, 19, defeated top seed and World No. 4 Paula Badosa in the second round of the Tokyo Open on Wednesday to advance to the quarterfinals. The young Chinese player has had a breakout year and will now compete in her third tour-level quarterfinal of the season. She had reached the last eight in Toronto and was a semifinalist in Melbourne Summer Set 1. The victory over Badosa is her first completed top ten victory of her career. She had defeated Ons Jabeur in Toronto, but that victory came after she had retired. Zheng, who had won the first round with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Misaki Doi, needed an hour and 18 minutes to beat the top seed.
Claire Liu of the United States, who knocked out two top 50 players in two rounds, has set up a surprise quarterfinal against Zheng. In the first round, Liu defeated seventh seed Alison Riske-Amritraj 6-2, 6-3. She defeated World No. 44 Elise Mertens 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday. Liu had a breakdown after the first game of the second set after edging out the first. But she took over from there, winning six games in a row to win the competition in an hour and 25 minutes. Liu, a finalist in Rabat and winner of the WTA 125 in Paris, improved her season record to 26-19 with her win on Wednesday.
