Zhang and Pliskova will take on each other in the fourth round of the 2023 Australian Open on January 23.
On January 23, the Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova will play Zhang Shuai of China in the fourth round of the 2023 Australian Open. On Saturday, Zhang Shuai defeated Katie Volynets in straight sets to celebrate her 34th birthday and advance to the Australian Open fourth round. In her 12 appearances at the Melbourne major, the Chinese player has only advanced this far twice. She last made it this far in 2016, when Johanna Konta knocked her out in the quarterfinals. In the first round, Zhang defeated Patricia Maria ig of Romania 6-1, 4-6, 6-0. In the following round, Zhang defeated Petra Marti of Croatia 6-3, 6-3. On Saturday’s third round, she continued to astound, eliminating the world no. 113 in just 65 minutes.
30th seed Karolina Pliskova is playing some excellent tennis at the Australian Open, which has led to her current position in Melbourne’s fourth round. She has reached the Round of 16 four times in her last ten attempts. It’s interesting to note that she at least advanced to the quarterfinals on each of the previous three occasions. The Czech lost in the last eight stage in 2017 and 2018, but she advanced to the semifinals in 2019 before losing to Naomi Osaka, who eventually won. The two-time Grand Slam finalist, who was unable to compete due to a hand injury last year, appears to be a serious contender this time around.

Zhang, however, has momentum on her side ahead of the fourth round fixture and will be hoping to break the curse. The head to head currently stands at 7-0.
