Adrian Mannarino put together an improbable championship-winning run in Winston Salem last month, which was only his second victory on the main circuit. Adrian Mannarino had only won 14 of his 40 matches in 2021 and had been suffering for consistency the entire season so far in 2022. In the first round of his subsequent appearance at the US Open, the seasoned Frenchman was easily defeated by the underdog Gijs Brouwer in straight sets, failing to capitalise on his confidence-boosting performance. The former world #22 has played six matches in the competition and lost five of them since making it all the way to the semifinals of his first ATP Metz campaign back in 2008.

Ilya Ivashka defeated Mikael Ymer to claim second place in Winston Salem last year, and Ymer’s failure to maintain those positions last month caused him to fall significantly in the ATP Rankings. The Swede immediately recovered from his setback and put his disappointment behind him by winning two significant matches in the Davis Cup last week against Diego Schwartzman and Jannik Sinner. In the first half of the 2022 season, the 24-year-old could only win three times in a row in tour-level competitions, and two of those streaks took place in France at Montpellier (SF) and the French Open (R3).
