The young 19 year old Emma Raducanu is the sixth British woman (Virginia Wade, Sue Barker, Jo Durie, and Johanna Konta) to reach the top ten in the Open Era, and the first since Konta in 2016. Raducanu stunned the world when she became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title at the US Open last year. After shining on way to the fourth round of Wimbledon earlier this year, the young Brit was already seen as a bright future for British tennis, but no one could have imagined what occurred next. Raducanu defeated Belinda Bencic, Maria Sakkari, and Leylah Fernandez on her way to winning the US Open in 10 straight matches without dropping a set.

Raducanu has become a global sensation and has had further tennis success since her triumph in New York. She has reached the first round of each of the other Grand Slams, as well as the quarter-finals of the Transylvania Open and the Stuttgart Open earlier this year. She also made her Billie Jean King Cup debut for Great Britain in a qualifying match against Czech Republic in April. Raducanu became LTA Colour Holder No.317 in a 3-2 loss to the Czechs, when the 19-year-old won her maiden professional clay match over top-50 rated Tereza Martincova. Raducanu will return to New York next month to defend her prized US Open crown, from August 29 to September 11.

WTA Rankings

With no points available at Wimbledon, all movement in this week’s WTA rankings is attributable to points dropped from last year’s tournament. Iga Swiatek’s reign at the top continues, as she retains a comfortable lead over No. 2 Anett Kontaveit, who has 4,326 points. Maria Sakkari returns to No. 3 in her career, while Paula Badosa remains at No. 4. Despite reaching the All England Club final, Ons Jabeur fell three positions to No. 5. If points were awarded for this year’s edition, she would have finished second.

Aryna Sabalenka remains at No. 6, while Danielle Collins rises to a new career high of No. 7. Jessica Pegula, Garbine Muguruza, Emma Raducanu, and Coco Gauff all climbed one spot to Nos. 8, 9, 10, and 11, respectively. Raducanu has already broken into the top 10, while Gauff has set a new career high. Leylah Fernandez, who missed Wimbledon due to injury, upped her ranking as well, climbing to No. 14, a career high for her. Elena Rybakina, the Wimbledon winner, remains at No. 23. Under normal circumstances, her first Grand Slam triumph would have pushed her to sixth place in the WTA rankings. Simona Halep, who advanced to the semifinals, would have returned to the top 10.
