For reasons of sponsorship, the Ostarva Open is sometimes referred to as the AGEL Open and is back for a third time. From October 3 to 9, there will be a WTA 500 competition.
In order to make up for the multiple tournaments that had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ostrava Open was established in 2020. It is a WTA 500 event and is played on indoor hardcourts. The inaugural competition was won by Aryna Sabalenka, who defeated Victoria Azarenka in the championship match. Due to its enormous success, the competition returned on the WTA tour the following year. The number of well-known players who have signed up for the third edition shows how quickly it has gained popularity among players. J&T Banka funded the competition for its first few iterations; starting in 2022, AGEL will take on that responsibility. The AGEL Open is the new name for the competition.
A first-round bye has been granted to the top four seeds. The players with the highest seeds in the top half of the draw are Iga Swiatek and Anett Kontaveit. The Estonian is most likely to start her title defence against Jil Teichmann, while the World No. 1 might face Zhang Shuai in the second round. A first-round matchup between Daria Kasatkina and Emma Raducanu is scheduled. In the first round, Victoria Azarenka will face Ekaterina Alexandrova, a two-time Major champion.
The WTA Ostrava Open 2022 will feature five rounds of competition apart from the qualifying matches. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final. The tournament is scheduled to start on Monday, October 3 and conclude on Sunday, October 9.
