Day six of the 2022 WTA Madrid Open was one of shockers as a number of ‘big name players’ were unceremoniously dumped out of the tournament by the unseeded ones. This includes the likes of Naomi Osaka, fourth seed Maria Sakkari, and sixth seed Danielle Collins. Seventh seed Garbine Muguruza was also one of the players that was knocked out in the round of 32. Earlier, second seed Paula Badosa had also been eliminated. Fans could very well have a new champion in the capital of Spain. Young stars Emma Raducanu and Coco Gauff continued their journey as they both emerged victorious in their respective matches, as did unseeded Spanish player Sara Sorribes Tormo. The Spaniard defeated Osaka to reach the round of 16 of what has been quite a memorable Madrid Open for her so far.

Sorribes Tormo dispatches Osaka

It was quite surprising how comfortable Sorribes Tormo was against Osaka. The Spaniard won in straight-sets by a score of 6-3, 6-1 to reach the round of 16 of the Madrid Open. She will face Daria Kasatkina in the next round. Surprisingly, the stats are in favour of Osaka for the most part. The Japanese player hit six aces while Tormo scored just the one. The Spaniard committed a couple of double faults as well. The win percentage on the first and second serves for Tormo was 75% and 33% respectively while for Osaka they were 64% and 34%.

Maria Sakkari bids adieu

Fourth seed Maria Sakkari was beaten by Daria Kasatkina in the round of 32 after what had been a promising start to the tournament by the Greek. Sakkari lost the match 6-3, 3-6, 1-6 in what was a rather uncharacteristic display. For Kasatkina, it was arguably the biggest victory so far in her career. She will face Sara Sorribes Tormo in the next round. The stats of the match painted a tight picture. Sakkari scored five aces, two more than her opponent. She did, however, commit six double faults in the tie. The Greek’s win percentage on the first and second serves were 72% and 54% respectively. For Kasatkina, they were 72% and 52% respectively.

Danielle Collins’ farewell

Another seeded player who was beaten on the day was sixth seed Danielle Collins. It was a heavy defeat for the American who lost 6-1, 6-1 against Canada’s Bianca Andreescu. Andreescu will face another American in Jessica Pegula in the round of 16. Both players hit one ace in the match but Collins committed six double faults. The American’s win percentages on the first and second serves were just 48% and 37% respectively. Andreescu, on the other hand, recorded 59% and 71% respectively.
