On Sunday, Alycia Parks won the WTA singles championship at the Lyon Open, capping off her historic week on the WTA Tour with her first Top 5 triumph. After 2 hours and 7 minutes of intense tennis, the No. 1 seed and local favourite Caroline Garcia were defeated by the 22-year-old American, 7-6(7), 7-5, and the winner’s trophy was awarded. After reaching her first tour-level semifinal and final this week, Parks advanced all the way to the crown by defeating World No. 5 Garcia and preventing the Frenchwoman from winning her 12th WTA singles championship of her career at a local tournament.

Parks, who defeated No. 7 Maria Sakkari in Ostrava the previous year, now has two victories inside the Top 10. However, the American had previously lost to then-No. 4 Ons Jabeur in Berlin last year, making this his first win over a player currently ranked inside the Top 5. Parks’ ascent up the WTA singles rankings is being supported by her two WTA 125 championships from the conclusion of the previous season. This week’s World No. 79 ranking for the American is 120 spots higher than it was a year ago. (more information to follow)
