In Long Island, the tournament debuted in 1981 as an exhibition event, and it stayed there until 1989. It was formally a part of the ATP tour starting in 1990. The inaugural contest was won by Stefan Edberg, who defeated Goran Ivanisevic. In 2005, the event was relocated to New Haven, where it stayed until 2010. The occasion has been held in Winston-Salem at its current location since 2011. There are presently 48 players in the competition, with 16 seeds. All players with seeds get byes in the first round. The event has formerly been won by Grand Slam champions Ivan Lendl, Lleyton Hewitt, and Daniil Medvedev, among others.
