Wimbledon 2021: Ashleigh Barty, Victoria Sabalenka, Ons Jabeur, Karolina Pliskova make it to first quarterfinal

Barty beat French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova 7-5, 6-3, putting a pause to her 15-match winning streak.

World No 1 Ashleigh Barty, second seed Aryna Sabalenka, Ons Jabeur, and former world No 1 Karolina Pliskova reached the first quarterfinal. Barty beat French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova 7-5, 6-3, putting a pause to her 15-match winning streak.

Barty may have won in straight sets but it was not easy. It was a hard-fought 95-minute encounter against an opponent who had not won a singles grass match draw before Wimbledon. Ons Jabeur’s moved ahead in her historic Wimbledon campaign and beat 2020 French Open champion, Iga Swiatek, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.

Jabeur never looked back after she shrugged off the first set loss. She broke her 20-year-old opponent in the first game of the second set. That set the tone for the rest of the match. Ons dominated Swiatek to such an extent, that at one point she smashed the top of the net angrily with her racquet.

Angelique Kerber stands tall in Wimbledon 2021

Angelique Kerber, the 2018 champion, defeated American teenager Coco Gauff 6-4, 6-4 in 1 hour and 16 minutes.

Kerber, the only Wimbledon women’s champion remaining in the draw, will go against Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic for a place in the semi-finals.

For Gauff, 17, it was defeat at the same stage she exited two years ago.

Muchova reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals, beating Spain’s 30th seed Paula Badosa 7-6 (8/6) 6-4. The Czech, who beat world No 1 Barty to reach the Australian Open semi-finals this year. Muchova could face Barty in a re-match if both win the quarter-finals.
