On January 21, 1989, Zhang Shuai, a Chinese tennis player, was born. With Samantha Stosur, she won the women’s doubles titles in the 2019 Australian Open and the 2021 US Open. Zhang finished second at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships behind tennis player Elise Mertens and went to four more major semifinals in women’s and mixed doubles. She has won 12 WTA Tour titles, including the Cincinnati Open in 2021 with Stosur, and she currently owns the No. 2 doubles ranking in the world, which she obtained in July 2022. Zhang has also earned two spots in the WTA Finals. She has also had success in the singles game, rising to a high of No. 22 in the world in January 2023. Zhang has won three WTA singles championships—at the 2013 and 2017 Guangzhou International and the 2022 Lyon Open—and placed second in three additional competitions. At the 2016 Australian Open and the 2019 Wimbledon Championships, she advanced to the quarterfinals of two prestigious tournaments. Zhang is one of only five Chinese tennis players who have advanced to this stage of a Grand Slam, joining Li Na, Zheng Jie, Peng Shuai, and Wang Qiang. She competed at the Olympic Games in 2012 and 2016 and has represented China in the Billie Jean King Cup since 2009.

Her early career

She became a professional in 2003, and in August of that same year, she competed in her maiden singles match at Mollerusa. She won over Matilde Munoz-Gonzalves in the opening round of qualifying before falling to Laura Figuerola-Foix. After spending a complete year competing on the ITF Women’s Circuit, Zhang ended 2004 in 901st place. Between 2006 and 2009, she competed in singles ITF tournaments and won one $50,000 event, eight $25k events, and three $10k events. She had only won two WTA Tour main-draw events as of October 2009 though. But as a wildcard participant in the 2013 Guangzhou Open, she captured her first singles championship.

Year 2022 journey

At the Australian Open, she advanced to the third round in singles and the second round in doubles with her regular partner Stosur, who declared that this year would be her final one on the court. Together with another Australian, John Peers, she also made it all the way to the semifinals in mixed doubles for the first time at this major. On April 11, 2022, she attained a career-high doubles ranking of No. 5 after competing in the Charleston Open, where she and Caroline Dolehide advanced to the doubles quarterfinals. At the French Open, she advanced to the third round with Caty McNally. She achieved a new doubles career-high ranking of No. 3 as a result on June 13, 2022. With Elise Mertens as her partner, she made her maiden major final appearance at Wimbledon. On July 11, 2022, she attained a career-high ranking of No. 2 in the world for doubles. Zhang fell to eventual champion Simona Halep in the second round of the Canadian Open on her journey to the US Open. At the US Open, Zhang advanced to the fourth round as the oldest woman, however she was defeated by Coco Gauff in a nail-biting battle that lasted nearly two hours.

Zhang Shuai was born to Wang Fengqin and Zhang Zhiqiang on January 21, 1989. Zhang has not disclosed the ages, dates of birth, or any other details about her parents, despite the fact that they are routinely pictured together. The day of her parents’ nuptials is likewise uncertain. Zhang, on the other hand, credits her parents’ influence for her tennis success. This is due to the fact that when she was six years old, her parents took her to a nearby tennis club to start playing tennis. Regarding Zhang’s parents, there is no additional information.
