Veteran tennis star Kei Nishikori has been the trailblazer for the sport in his country. He was the only second male Japanese player to be ranked in top five for his country after Jiro Sato, becoming the first and only one to do so in the Open Era. He reached his career-high ranking of World No.4 in March 2015. The Japanese stalwart has won 12 singles titles but still remains bereft of a major championship success.
His best-ever result at the majors came at the US Open in 2014 when he reached the summit clash. It also made him the first Asian player to reach the final of a Grand Slams event. Nishikori has, however, reached the quarter-finals of Australian Open four times, French Open thrice and Wimbledon twice. He also brought the first Olympic medal in the form of a bronze for Japan in 96 years after defeating Spanish ace Rafael Nadal in Rio 2016.
Nishikori, 32, married his long-time girlfriend Mai Yamaguchi on December 11, 2020.

Yamaguchi is a former Japanese model. She is also better known as Ako Mizuki. She has also blamed Nishikori time and again for not sharing his worries too much and keeping it up to himself.
“Basically I don’t moan or whine to my wife at all, actually she sometimes blames me for not talking about my worries with her, she wants me to share my trouble with her, but I take it all on myself, I’ve always been like that,” Nishikori said.
“I usually get deeply depressed for a while, at the moment that I get injured or I’m told about surgery, but after that I somehow come back because I still have motivation and passion for playing tennis again.
“Enjoy it, you’ll realize how important it is to enjoy as you get older. You might want to quit at some point, but after getting though that you can be filled with happiness (of playing),” he added.
Nishikori tied the knot with Yamaguchi in December 2020 after dating for five years. The pair welcomed their first child in 2020 and the Japanese-ace mentioned that parenting is not an easy job.
“I didn’t realize (how tough it is to take care of a child), you don’t get that in your childhood, so you should be grateful to your parents.
“Of course you sometimes feel like you don’t like your parents, but try to be nice to them after a few days,” Nishikori said, per Daily Online.
