The Russian, who is currently ranked number 2 in the world, managed to win the US Open by beating Novak Djokovic in the final in straight sets. It was a historic win for Daniil Medvedev, who halted Djokovic’s quest for a Calendar Grand Slam. Having lost in the final of the Australian Open to Djokovic, it was sweet revenge for Daniil Medvedev.

Gilles Cervara owns the Elite Tennis Centre in Cannes. Cervara has been coaching junior players since 2007 in his academy. But, Daniil Medvedev is special in many ways. When the Medvedev family was struggling to move to France due to some personal and logistical issues, it was Cervara who helped them move to the country.

Cervara saw something special with Daniil Medvedev. In 2017, he became his full-time coach and it was the first time he was coaching a professional Tennis player.
Gilles Cervara is the coach who accompanies Daniil Medvedev to all the tournaments. Apart from Cervara, there is Eric Hernandez who is Medvedev’s physical trainer. Cervara won the ATP award for the best coach in 2019. In that year, Medvedev made his first big strides in the Tennis world. Cervara was at the helm when Medvedev won the Nitto ATP Finals in 2020, much before he won his first Grand Slam in 2021 at the US Open. Cervara was nominated for the best coach award in 2020 but he lost to Fernando Vicente, who currently coaches Andrey Rublev.

Gilles Cervara has managed to achieve tremendous success with Medvedev and he reveals the manta behind his functioning. “We have a very good connection, it’s not about talking, it’s sometimes just a look to convey energy and emotion. Things that worry me, don’t worry him and vice versa. I work on my coaching to develop my skills, as Daniil does with his tennis. Both are different approaches to the sport, but we have a good bond and one goal. I want him to realize his potential and have the best career he can,” Cervara revealed.
