Russian tennis player Anastasia Sergeyevna Potapova was born on March 30, 2001. Potapova’s highest singles ranking is No. 42, attained on December 12, 2022, while her highest doubles ranking is No. 40, attained on December 5, 2022. Potapova won the girls’ singles title at the 2016 Wimbledon Championships and was a former junior No. 1. Potapova has a junior circuit career-high rating of 1, attained in July 2016. Potapova has achieved great success on the junior tour, reaching the doubles finals at the 2015 US Open and the 2016 French Open, the semifinals at the 2016 French Open, the quarterfinals at the 2016 Australian Open, and the 2015 Wimbledon Championships. Dayana Yastremska was defeated in the 2016 Wimbledon Championships girls’ final by Potapova. In the decisive set, challenges resulted in the overturn of two of the seven match points. She was the best junior in the world thanks to this victory. Other junior accomplishments for Potapova include semi-final finishes at the Grade A Trofeo Bonfiglio and Orange Bowl Championships. The Nike Junior International at Roehampton, a Grade 1 competition, which she won after defeating other top-ranked junior athletes like Claire Liu, Jaimee Fourlis, Sofia Kenin, Olga Danilovi, and Olesya Pervushina, is her biggest junior victory outside of Wimbledon.

2022 Journey

At the Melbourne Summer Set 1, where she advanced to the quarterfinals but fell to fellow countrywoman Veronika Kudermetova in three sets, Potapova had a strong start to the season. The 30th seed Camila Giorgi overcame the Russian in the opening round of the Australian Open as well. However, she and Rebecca Peterson lost to eventual champions Beatriz Haddad Maia and Anna Danilina in the doubles quarterfinals despite leading by a set and a break. Thus lost in the first round of the Monterrey Open, Indian Wells Open, and St. Petersburg Ladies’ Trophy, and she failed to keep up her point total from Dubai in 2021, which caused her to drop out of the top 100. However, she and Vera Zvonareva advanced to the semifinals of the doubles tournament in St. Petersburg.

At the Istanbul Cup, she was ranked No. 122 and defeated third seed and No. 29 in the world, Veronika Kudermetova, to win her first WTA championship. She eventually climbed back into the top 80, reaching world No. 78 on April 25, 2022. She was barred from competing at Wimbledon in June as a result of the ban on Russian players brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Potapova advanced to the semifinals of the Lausanne Open in July but fell to Olga Danilovi of Serbia in straight sets. However, this outcome ensured that she would reach a new career high ranking of No. 63. Additionally, she advanced to the semifinals of the Hamburg European Open before falling to world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit in straight sets. She debuted in the Prague Open final, losing to Marie Bouzková, and on August 1, 2022, she rose to world No. 48 to enter the top 50. In the same competition, she and Yana Sizikova won their third doubles championship by defeating fellow countrywomen Angelina Gabueva and Anastasia Zakharova. On August 1, 2022, she achieved a career-high ranking of No. 52 in doubles.
