Ajla Tomljanovic, a professional tennis player of Croatian and Australian ancestry, was born on May 7, 1993. She has triumphed in four singles matches and three doubles matches on the ITF Circuit. On October 31, 2022, she climbed as high as No. 33 in the world during her singles career. On January 5, 2015, she peaked at No. 47 in the doubles rankings. At the 2009 Australian Open, Tomljanovic and Christina McHale won the girls’ doubles championship. Tomljanovic was a talented young athlete. She reached a combined career high ranking of junior world No. 4 on March 30, 2009.  Prior to 2014, Tomljanovic represented her native Croatia on the field. After attaining permanent status in Australia, she started representing Australia in matches at the 2014 US Open. She had to represent Croatia at all non-Grand Slam competitions for the following four years before receiving Australian citizenship in January 2018, which allowed her to do so at all WTA Tour competitions.

Tomljanovic began the 2021 campaign at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Open. Aryna Sabalenka, the fourth seed and eventual champion, defeated her in the second round. She competed in the inaugural Gippsland Trophy, losing to Alizé Cornet in the opening round. She was defeated by second seed Simona Halep in the second round of the Australian Open. At the Birmingham Classic to kick off the grass-court season, Tomljanovic defeated top seed Elise Mertens in three sets. Coco Vandeweghe, a qualifier, defeated her in the second round. She competed at the Eastbourne International, where Camila Giorgi defeated her in the final round of qualifying. At Wimbledon, she made it to a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time in her career before losing to Ashleigh Barty, the top seed and eventual champion. Tomljanovic defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the second match while representing Australia at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in November. Australia defeated against Switzerland in the semifinals. Tomljanovic finished the year in position 45.

2022 Journey

Tomljanovic defeated Anett Kontaveit in the opening round of the French Open. Her victory over fifth-ranked Kontaveit was her largest victory in terms of ranking since winning over Radwaska at the same competition eight years prior. In the second round, Varvara Gracheva defeated her. Defeating Jil Teichmann, Catherine Harrison, Barbora Krejková, and Alize Cornet along the way, Tomljanovi advanced to back-to-back quarterfinals at the Wimbledon Championships before falling to eventual champion Elena Rybakina. To advance to the third round of the US Open, Tomljanovic beat injury-protected players Karolna Muchová and Evgeniya Rodina. There, she overcame Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1, in three sets. Williams, who had previously stated that she would retire after the competition, played her last professional singles match there. Tomljanovic won in straight sets over Liudmila Samsonova to advance to her maiden US Open quarterfinal and third overall at a Grand Slam. She was defeated in straight sets by World No. 5 Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinals. Tomljanovic ended the year with a season-high world ranking of No. 33.

Ajla Tomljanovic and her Parents, Family

The tennis pro was born on May 7, 1993, in Zagreb, Croatia. Father Ratko Tomljanovic, a Croatian, and mother Emina Tomljanovic, a Bosnian, are Ajla Tomljanovic’s parents. Ratko Tomljanovic won the European Handball Cup with RK Zagreb in 1992 and 1993 while playing handball professionally. Alja, however, started playing tennis because of Emina. However, Ajla Tomljanovic’s mother reportedly becomes so anxious before her daughter’s tennis matches that she frequently chooses to go on long walks with the family dog in order to decompress. The main difference this year, according to Alja, is that my mother is present, she stated after defeating Alize Cornet in the Round of 16. Even on TV, she didn’t watch any of my matches last year.

Tomljanovic is single right now. She previously dated Matteo Berrettini, another tennis player. But by the end of 2021, they broke up. From 2015 to 2017, Tomljanovic dated another tennis pro, Nick Kyrgios, before Berrettini.
