Spring in the northern hemisphere is closer than ever and that means tennis’ grand slam season is almost upon us. With Roland-Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open all set to take place over the course of the next few months, we are in the thrilling position of standing on the brink of more history being made.

Who will triumph in 2023?

But who would have triumphed come the end of it? Will it be Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal or Daniil Medvedev? If you bet on tennis then you may be inclined to think the Serb will as he is favourite to win Wimbledon at odds of 11/10 and the US Open at a price of just 11/8.

While Djokovic will prove a tough man to beat this season, perhaps the answer to who will emerge victorious centres around which player has the best serve on the ATP Tour in 2023. This is, after all, the most potent weapon any player can possess in their arsenal.

As things stand, that honour belongs to Nick Kyrgios. This is, at least, according to Serena Williams’ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou who spent ten hugely successful years in the American’s corner as she won 16 grand slams. In other words, Mouratoglou’s voice can be trusted on these matters.

Kyrgios’ serve

It’s easy to see why Mouratoglou thinks Kyrgios has the most effective serve on tour, given that the fiery Australian rocketed down 747 aces in only 47 games last season.

It was this booming serve that helped Kyrgios enjoy a breakout year on tour in 2022 after reaching the final of Wimbledon, only to lose to a determined Djokovic.

However, further success was achieved after Wimbledon when Kyrgios made history by winning both the singles and doubles titles at the Citi Open in Washington in early August 2022.

As this run of impressive results shows, Kyrgios was able to unlock the potential behind his serve in 2022 which is why 2023 could be the year when the Australian wins his first grand slam.

Will Kyrgios’ temperament let his match-winning serve down?

Indeed, fans of the passionate Australian should be encouraged by what they’ve seen over the last 12 months given that the 27-year-old continues to grow both on and off the court. In particular, it finally seems that Kyrgios has found a greater level of inner peace and this could prove to be a vital development that allows his serve to reap the rewards it deserves.

Essentially, there has never been any doubt about his talent, but for longer than anyone cares to remember – not least Kyrgios himself – the Australian would throw away golden opportunities to win tennis’ biggest prizes by letting his emotions get the better of him.

Naturally, this isn’t to say that the tennis world won’t ever see Kyrgios become animated again, but there appear to be healthy measures put in place now that will prohibit the total meltdowns that have hurt his career up until this point.

So, with the best serve on tour and a new mindset, could 2023 be the year when Kyrgios finally achieves his potential? Only time will tell but it would be a surprise if, by the end of the grand slam season, Kyrgios hasn’t achieved his lifelong goal of winning one.
