Alize Cornet is a French professional tennis player who was born on January 22, 1990. On the WTA Tour, Cornet has won six singles matches, three doubles matches, and three singles matches and three doubles matches on the ITF Circuit. She peaked at No. 11 in the world for WTA singles on February 16, 2009. Cornet has also advanced past the second round at all four Grand Slam competitions, making it to the 2022 Australian Open quarterfinals, the fourth round at the 2014 Wimbledon Championships, the 2015 and 2017 French Opens, and the 2020 US Open. She is in eighth place for overall appearances with 67 and holds the record for the most Grand Slam appearances in a row with 64. Because of her three victories over Serena Williams, the world’s best player, Cornet rose to fame in 2014. Cornet reached her biggest singles final in over six years at the Dubai Tennis Championships after defeating Williams in the semifinals in straight sets. She overcame a set deficit to defeat Williams in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships in July, bringing the American her earliest elimination from the competition since 2005. Later that year, when Williams retired due to sickness, she earned her third victory in the second round in Wuhan.

At the German Open in June 2021, at the start of the grass-court season, Cornet advanced to the semifinals by defeating the third-seeded Bianca Andreescu (her first top-10 win for 2021) and the sixth-seeded Garbie Muguruza in a close three-set battle. In the semifinal, she was defeated by Belinda Bencic. In the first round of Wimbledon, she overcame fifth-seeded Andreescu once more, earning her second top-10 victory of the year. Cornet competed in the first Chicago Women’s Open in August, making it to the final where she was defeated by Elina Svitolina. Leylah Fernandez defeated her in straight sets in the second round of Indian Wells in October.

Cornet defeated Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova, world No. 3 Garbie Muguruza, 29th seed Tamara Zidanek, and 14th seed Simona Halep on her way to the Australian Open quarterfinals. Cornet made her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance in this round after 63 attempts to make it to the last eight. She fell to Danielle Collins in the quarterfinal match, though. Cornet’s participation in the Wimbledon Championships brought her even with Ai Sugiyama’s record of 62 straight Grand Slam appearances. She defeated the number one player in the world, Iga Witek, in the third round, snapping a 37-match winning streak. She defeated the current world No. 1 for the second time at Wimbledon with this victory (after Serena Williams in 2014). Cornet was defeated by Ajla Tomljanovi in the fourth round after a match that lasted three sets and 2 hours and 34 minutes. Making her record-breaking 63rd consecutive major appearance at the US Open, she defeated the defending champion, Emma Raducanu, in straight sets. She then overcame Kateina Siniaková. In the third round, she was defeated by Danielle Collins in a set and a half.
