Ajla Tomljanovic (born 7 May 1993) is a professional tennis player who is of Croatian and Australian descent. On the ITF Circuit, she has won four singles matches and three doubles matches. She attained a singles career-high world No. 33 ranking on October 31, 2022. Her doubles ranking peak was at No. 47 on January 5, 2015. Tomljanovic was a skilled young athlete who teamed up with Christina McHale to win the girls’ doubles title at the 2009 Australian Open. On March 30, 2009, she attained a junior world No. 4 rating, which was a combined career high. Prior to 2014, Tomljanovic represented her native Croatia on the field. Tomljanovic defeated Anett Kontaveit in the opening round of the French Open. Her victory over fifth-ranked Kontaveit was her largest victory in terms of ranking since winning over Radwaska at the same competition eight years prior. In the second round, Varvara Gracheva defeated her. Defeating Jil Teichmann, Catherine Harrison, Barbora Krejková, and Alize Cornet along the way, Tomljanovi advanced to back-to-back quarterfinals at the Wimbledon Championships before falling to eventual champion Elena Rybakina. To advance to the third round of the US Open, Tomljanovic beat injury-protected players Karolna Muchová and Evgeniya Rodina. There, she overcame Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1, in three sets. Williams, who had previously stated that she would retire after the competition, played her last professional singles match there. Tomljanovic won in straight sets over Liudmila Samsonova to advance to her maiden US Open quarterfinal and third overall at a Grand Slam. She was defeated in straight sets by World No. 5 Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinals. Tomljanovic ended the year with a season-high world ranking of No. 33.
