Xiyu Wang advanced to the second round with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian. Wang, who had previously lost in the first round in Tallinn and the first qualifying round in Ostrava, snapped a three-match losing streak in the first round in Cluj Napoca. Wang had a strong run just before departing for Tallinn. She reached the semifinals in Washington after being a lucky loser in the main draw, and she reached the quarterfinals in Granby. The 21-year-old lefty finished the North American swing in the third round of the US Open. Wang was very successful on clay at the lower levels of competition. She reached her first WTA 125 final in Valencia, as well as three ITF finals, but she has yet to win a title this year.
