Tommy Paul and Nicolas Alvarez Varona are scheduled to face each other in the Second round of the 2022 ATP Gijon Open on October 12.
In the first round of the ATP Gijon tournament earlier this week, Tommy Paul easily defeated the current Boys’ US Open winner Martin Landaluce. He will now play another gifted young Spanish player for a spot in the quarterfinals. At the ATP level, the former Boys’ French Open winner would not have chosen an easier draw given his current odds of making it to the quarterfinals without playing a player ranked in the top 250. His second-round opponent is ranked #231 in the world right now, whereas his first-round opponent is unranked and had only played one professional match prior to this week.
This week, Nicolas Alvarez Varona defeated fellow qualifier Marco Trungelliti in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-0, to make his debut in the main draw of tour-level competitions. He defeated Oriol Roca Batalla in three sets earlier in this campaign and dominated Lorenzo Giustino in the qualifying rounds. The 21-year-old is currently not physically prepared to have a significant influence on the main tour. He has had physical difficulties in many of his Challenger matches and has retired five times since the start of the 2021 season, including this year at the Forli Challenger.
Tommy Paul and Nicolas Alvarez Varona are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Gijon Open on Wednesday, October 12. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 10 and end on October 16.
The ATP Gijon Open 2022 will have five rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The competition’s main draw is set to commence on October 10, 2022 and conclude on October 16, 2022.
