Stefanos Tsitsipas’ 2022 Laver Cup campaign will begin with a blockbuster tie against Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman. Tsitsipas is someone who is in desperate for some form at the moment. The Greek’s US Open campaign was utterly disappointing as he was ousted in the very first round by qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan 0-6, 1-6, 6-3, 5-7. Before that, the Greek had reached the final of the 2022 Cincinnati Masters but was beaten by Borna Coric 7-6 (7-0), 6-2. Tsitsipas and Schwartzman had recently faced one another in the round of 16 of the Cincinnati Masters which the Greek had won 6-3, 6-3.
Schwartzman might have gone further than Tsitsipas in the US Open but his performance was not on par with his standards in any way. The Argentine beat Jack Sock and Alexei Popyrin to make it through to the third round of the Grand Slam. Up against Frances Tiafoe, fans expected the Argentine to win but the American pulled off a shock on home soil. Schwartzman was beaten 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, 6-4 by the American who would go on to oust Rafael Nadal.
Stefanos Tsitsipas will take on Diego Schwartzman on Friday, September 23 in the first singles match of the 2022 Laver Cup. The tentative timing of the match is 2:20 pm BST or 6:50 pm IST. The tournament is scheduled to be held from September 23 to September 25.
