On Thursday, the third round of the 2022 ATP Cincinnati Open will take place, with the world number seven Stefanos Tsitsipas taking on the 16th-ranked Diego Schwartzman.
In order to get rolling in the run-up to the US Open, Stefanos Tsitsipas needed a solid performance after consecutive losses at Wimbledon and Montreal. And with his straight-set victory in the second round here, he doesn’t seem to have hurt his chances in any way. Tsitsipas, who received a bye in the first round, defeated Filip Krajinovic 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of play. Tsitsipas, who blasted 14 aces in the match, faced no break points while defeating his opponent’s service once in each of the two sets. In the entire encounter, Tsitsipas only dropped eight points on his own serve. Tsitsipas would like to think he has a better chance against the troubled Schwartzman, but the Argentine’s track record against him on hard courts raises some doubts.
As far as a bookmaker’s favourite was concerned, there was no difference between Diego Schwartzman and his opponent Aslan Karatsev in the second round, and that is how the match turned out as well. In the end, it was Schwartzman who prevailed in three sets, winning 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2 to guarantee his third consecutive appearance in Cincinnati’s third round. Only the first set tie-breaker separated the two players in the match, which lasted almost three hours and saw both players break the other four times. Schwartzman only missed three points throughout. In a previous encounter that lasted three sets and was lost in the second round at Montreal last week, Schwartzman had just defeated Alex Molcan in the first round. He is aware of Tsitsipas’ strong hard court record, but given the state of his own play, Schwartzman will find it difficult to defeat him.
Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwartzman are scheduled to face one another in the third round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Thursday, August 18. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.
The 2022 Cincinnati Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for both men’s and women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 14 and conclude on August 21 this year.
