The World No. 5 has a 17-7 record on hard courts, including a runner-up finish in Rotterdam and semifinal appearances in the Australian Open and Acapulco Open. Tsitsipas will look to start his campaign strong in the second round and then build from there.
On Tuesday, British qualifier Jack Draper made an impressive debut at the Canadian Open, defeating another qualifier, Hugo Gaston, in straight sets. The match, which was suspended with Draper leading on Monday, was over in less than an hour as the 20-year-old defeated the Frenchman 6-2, 6-3. The World No. 82 easily won the first set, breaking the Frenchman twice. He also led 2-0 in the second set, but Gaston tied it up at 2-2. Draper, who has been making a name for himself at the Challenger level this year, swept the match by winning the final four games in a row. The victory improved the Briton’s record on the tour to 9-6 this season.
