Tommy Paul won his first match of the European clay season earlier this week, overcoming the in-form Gregoire Barrere in a tough three-set victory. He previously competed in three ATP clay tournaments this year, all of which he lost in the first round to Yannick Hanfmann in Houston, Roman Safiullin in Madrid, and Cristian Garin in Rome. Despite being a former Boys’ French Open champion, the 26-year-old has only competed in one quarterfinal match in ATP events on clay in his career. Notably, he won that particular match, defeating Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets two years ago at the Parma tournament.
Brandon Nakashima had to wait nearly six months before claiming back-to-back victories for the first time this year. This feat was accomplished during the Lyon tournament, where he defeated fellow strugglers Diego Schwartzman and Arthur Rinderknech. The young American improved his career win/loss record on clay by reaching the quarterfinals in Lyon, bringing it into the positive zone at 20 wins and 19 losses. This is his best result at this level on the clay surface to date.
