Frances Tiafoe and Bernabe Zapata Miralles will take on each other in the round of 16 of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Thursday, October 6.
In the opening round of the ATP Tokyo, Frances Tiafoe easily defeated the out-of-sorts Yasutaka Uchiyama. In Tokyo in 2018, he upset Maximilian Marterer in the opening round before falling to Kevin Anderson in the second round, losing in three sets. This was his first victory in the Asian swing since that time. Since returning from the US, the American has become one of the most assured players on the main circuit, playing with greater assurance than the other three US Open semifinalists. He ended Team World’s miserable streak in the Laver Cup last month by winning a critical doubles match against Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer as well as a singles match against Stefanos Tsitsipas on Day 3.
In the opening round of ATP Tokyo, Bernabe Zapata Miralles defeated Japanese No. 2 Taro Daniel by winning in straight sets. He fell behind 3-5 in the opening set and 1-3 in the second, but he fought back on both occasions, winning 7-5 7-5. Prior to 2022, the Spaniard had only won six games in the main draw of tournaments on the tour, but he has since amassed nine such victories this year and achieved his first-ever participation in the quarterfinals at this level in Umag a few months ago.
