Frances Tiafoe and Miomir Kecmanovic will take on each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Friday, October 7.
In the second round of the ATP Tokyo, Miomir Kecmanovic chose the most difficult path imaginable against Dan Evans instead of taking the simpler one. In the deciding set, he blew a 4-1 lead before saving three match points in a row (on returns) and six in total. He then dominated the tiebreaker, 6-3 3-6 7-6. The young Serbian player has struggled with confidence in the second half of this season, and both of his victories in Tokyo required considerable effort. He overcame a set deficit to defeat Yoshihito Nishioka in the first round, 2-6 7-6 6-2, before playing Dan Evans in the second round.
Frances Tiafoe returned to the event this week, four years after he lost to Kevin Anderson in the second round of his first main-draw campaign in Tokyo in 2018. He easily dispatched underdogs Yasutaka Uchiyama and Bernabe Zapata Miralles in straight sets to go to the quarterfinal. The American hasn’t reached the quarterfinals as frequently as his Serbian opponent (5 vs. 7) so far in 2022, but he did well to advance quite far in a few tournaments, which allowed him break into the top 20 in the ATP rankings. He lost to Sebastian Baez in the Estoril final and just achieved his first slam semifinal appearance at the US Open.
Frances Tiafoe and Miomir Kecmanovic are scheduled to face each other in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Japan Open on Friday, October 7. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 3 and end on October 9.
