Hubert Hurkacz played in a crucial final at the Montreal Masters, won an ATP 500 event in Halle, and was ranked inside the top 10, but he lacks the consistency of a top-10 player. He has exited a tournament nine times already in 2022 without earning more than one victory, and he won’t conclude the year having reached a quarterfinal in a grand slam. Since the beginning of the 2021 season, the Pole has a propensity of leaving early or being very successful, and he has done the same in Metz. When he returned in 2021, he won the title after losing in the first round during his first campaign here in 2019, defeating players like Andy Murray and Pablo Carreno Busta.

After a six-year absence, Dominic Thiem made his way back to ATP Metz and defeated local favourite Richard Gasquet in the opening round in straight sets. He was behind by a break in both sets, but he was still able to win them both, 6-3 7-6. In a French Challenger tournament last week in Rennes, the former world #3 played on indoor hard courts for the first time since 2020 and came in second place against Ugo Humbert. Given that he missed the first two months of the 2022 season due to injury and didn’t record his first victory until July, the former ATP Metz runner-up has at least two victories in each of his past four ATP tournaments.
