Thiem got off to a good start at the ATP 250 competition as he beat a spirited Laslo Djere 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4 in the first round.
Dominic Thiem’s 2022 Tel Aviv Open got off to a positive start as he beat Serbia’s Laslo Djere in the first round 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-4 in two hours and 40 minutes. The Austrian’s start to the match was not ideal as he dropped the first set despite putting up a good fight. However, his fortunes turned in the second and third sets as he gained more confidence in his game and got an important break. At the post-match interview, Thiem called the break ‘lucky’. “I didn’t get off to a great start. I got the break in the second set and then I was a bit lucky I could turn the match around,” Thiem said. “The third set was a real grind… I am very grateful to everyone who came tonight. It is really nice to play in Israel.”
The Austrian will face a stern challenge in second seed Marin Cilic in the round of 16 of the ATP 250 competition. As he is one of he top-seeded players, the Croatian will play his first match of the tournament in the round of 16. He had a good showing at the 2022 US Open earlier this month which saw him beat the likes of Daniel Evans and Albert Ramos-Vinolas to make it through to the round of 16.
Dominic Thiem and Marin Cilic will take on each other in the round f 16 of the 2022 ATP Tel Aviv Open on Wednesday, September 28. The tournament has been scheduled to begin on Monday, September 26 and conclude on Sunday, October 2 this year.
