Garcia and Fernandez will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open on January 18.
In the first round, Iga Swiatek didn’t have it all her own way against Jule Niemeier, but it was another chance to show off her tenacity. The top seed, who advanced to the Australian Open semifinals last year, overcame a deficit of 3-5 in the second set and broke late in each set to win 6-4, 7-5, in just over two hours. The Pole has a special connection to this venue because she made her tour-level main draw debut there in 2019 and has made it at least as far as the fourth round on each of her previous three visits. With eight victories in the previous 12 months, she is back in the competition as the undisputed world number one.
Camila Osorio was present in Hobart but withdrew due to injury before she could participate in any warm-up events before she arrived in Melbourne. Having just defeated Panna Udvardy, 6-4, 6-1, she has now won her first match in the main draw at the Australian Open, as opposed to Naomi Osaka, who she lost to in the same match last year. Due to a combination of an injury and poor form, the Colombian has been unable to perform at her peak for the majority of last year. She had three tour-level main draw victories by the time she arrived in Australia in June. Due to her 0-2 win-loss record against the top 5 players, she faces a difficult task (lost matches both in straight sets).

Iga Swiatek and Camila Osorio have never faced each other in the past. The 2001-born athletes engaged in three junior doubles matches against each other (2017-18). Iga Swiatek is currently the clear favourite thanks to her 39-match winning streak against players outside the top 50, which dates back to 2021 Madrid. Camila Osorio, who is leading at Wimbledon in 2021, is 1-3 in the second round of major tournaments.
Garcia and Fernandez will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open on January 18.
