World no. 1 Iga Swiatek etched her name into the history books on Thursday when she broke the record for the longest winning streak in the 21st century. With a second round win over Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove, the Pole extended her winning run to 36 matches, breaking Venus Williams’ record of 35. The top seed will go up against Alize Cornet in the third round and she will be expecting to record a rather comfortable victory yet again.
Alize Cornet is an unseeded French player who has had a decent Wimbledon outing so far. In the first round, Cornet ousted 27th seed Yulia Putinseva 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). She would then go on to take another straight sets victory in the second round against Claire Liu. The score at the end of the match was 6-3, 6-3.
Swiatek and Cornet are scheduled to face each other on Saturday, July 2 in the third round of the 2022 Championships. The timing of the match has not been decided yet. The Championships is scheduled to begin on June 27 and go on until July 10. There were a number of exciting matches on July 2 as the likes of Swiatek, Badosa, Krejcikova and others will be in action.
